About the update

The Australian Parliament has passed the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1), Bill 2024 marking a significant development in the reforms of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The Bill establishes the framework to enable changes to the NDIS, that aim to deliver on the goal of the NDIS Review’s to return the scheme to its original purpose and improve outcomes for Australians with disability.

The NDIS Amendments Bill was passed by Parliament on 23 August 2024, after an extensive process that included multiple readings, committee reviews, and robust debates in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Bill’s progression through Parliament involved careful consideration of feedback from stakeholders, including disability advocates, service providers, and policymakers, ensuring that the final version addressed key concerns and aligned with the objectives of the NDIS Review.

With the Bill now passed, the next step is its implementation. This will require significant work from the Government to outline what these reforms look like in practice. The Government will work with the disability community on a consultation and co-design process when drafting and finalising these changes.

The changes will take time to develop and will be implemented in stages, using a phased and considered approach and in consultation with the disability community, with the aim of minimising disruption and maximising the benefits for those who rely on the NDIS.

Yooralla will continue to update the community on these sector reforms, including the NDIS Review and Disability Royal Commission. Please refer to our NDIS reforms webpage for any updates.
