Rosehill Secondary College’s Rosefest a fundraising success for Yooralla
Yooralla has been the grateful recipient of the fundraising efforts from Rosehill Secondary College’s Year 9 Fundraiser - the Mini 2021 Rosefest Carnival.
The fundraiser was organised as part of the year nine student’s Interdisciplinary Studies subject where they investigated the concept of ‘My Community’. During this time, they heard from two of Yooralla’s Speaktank presenters – Jeanette Lee and Peter Johnstone, via Zoom.
Yooralla’s Speaktank program aims to empower people with disability to speak for themselves and play an educative role in the community through stimulating discussions and sharing their own lived experiences of disability.
Jeanette Lee, Yooralla’s Customer Rights and Empowerment Practitioner spoke about her work supporting people with disability to have the confidence to speak up about accessibility and treatment in the community and workplace, as well as her lived experience as a person with disability.
Peter spoke to the students about the resilience needed while growing up with a disability and being integrated into a mainstream school, as well as the day-to-day care that he requires while living at one of Yooralla's accommodation services.
After hearing their stories, the students at Rosehill Secondary College chose Yooralla to be the recipients of their fundraising efforts from Rosefest, which included food stalls, live music provided by the school’s music department and a special barbeque.
Yooralla would like to thank Rosehill Secondary Colleges year 9 cohort for their fundraising efforts, to support people with disability to live the life they choose.
