If you thought all the Olympic action was only happening in Paris – you’d be wrong!
Athletes from across the state headed to Casey stadium for the first instalment of the Special Olympics Victoria (SOV) state games, including basketball stars from Drouin Community Hub.
The State Olympic Games platforms athletes with intellectual disability and autism by showcasing their determination and sportsmanship across various sporting fields.
The action-packed weekend, the first of two-installments, commenced with a special opening ceremony, before friends turned competitors out on the courts.
It was a great weekend, with all the clients having a great time getting into the Olympic spirit!
“It was good!” said Greg, one of the athletes from Drouin Hub who plays as part of Drouin Ducks.
“We got to watch the opening ceremony and competed in two games of basketball, they were my favourite parts of the day,” he said.
The Drouin Ducks competed valiantly, playing two games – winning one.
“I love being part of the Drouin Ducks,” said Greg.
Members of the Drouin Ducks played a very special extra game of basketball this week, before being presented with ribbons by representatives from Special Olympics Victoria for taking part in the event.
They’re already talking about competing at the next SOV games “cause it’s a great day!” said Greg.
The team are currently in the process of getting new uniforms and numbers for the Ducks that were designed by members of the team. Keep an eye out on our social media to see pictures when they take to the courts!
