Damian shares his story for International White Cane Day

Damian, a client at our Leongatha Community Hub, uses a cane and says that it is “important to have a day like White Cane Awareness Day to let people know that there are people who are blind or have low vision that need help.”

White Cane Awareness Day, celebrated annually on October 15, highlights the importance of the white cane, as a symbol of independence for individuals who are blind or have low vision.

This day raises awareness about the crucial role the white cane plays in enhancing mobility and safety, while also promoting equal opportunities and accessibility.

Damian's story

Damian, a client at our Leongatha Community Hub, uses a cane and says that it is “important to have a day like White Cane Awareness Day to let people know that there are people who are blind or have low vision that need help.”

Using a cane has enhanced Damian’s independence and ability to get around. Prior to using a cane, Damian “used to kick with the tip of my shoe to make sure something wasn’t in the way, but I don’t have to do that now,” he said.

“The cane picks up everything on the footpath; cracks, bumps, holes, and it measures the height of steps too,” he said.

Mindfulness matters

Something that the cane doesn’t pick up however, are people in public spaces.

“People can be the biggest challenge,” said Damian.

“Over half are great, they say sorry if they cut you off, or they stand aside and let you go. But there are some people that stand in the way or cut you off on purpose.”

If you see someone using a white cane, Damian recommends people “are mindful”, and ask before offering assistance.

“Most people are great. I quite often have people offering help and that’s great, you can say ‘yes please’ or ‘I’m right, thanks’. I often accept the help if I feel like I need it.”

“Asking is the best, it shows that they are looking out for you,” said Damian.

“Kids have even asked what do I need it [the cane] for. I tell them it helps me see, picks up stuff like cracks and bumps,” said Damian.
