Customers get out and about on the school holidays
This July school holidays had plenty to offer our customers, with excursions to Science works, museums, the Melbourne Zoo, train rides, mini golf, cinema, picnics, indoor play centre visits and more on the agenda!
Yooralla customers have been getting out and about this school holidays, enjoying a range of activities in Melbourne and surrounds through our school holiday program.
Yooralla’s school holiday program supports children and young people to socialise, experience new activities, enhance or learn new skills such as accessing public transport and time management, and to build independence and confidence in the community.
This July school holidays had plenty to offer our customers, with excursions to Science works, museums, the Melbourne Zoo, train rides, mini golf, cinema, picnics, indoor play centre visits and more on the agenda!
A small group of our program participants headed down to Geelong as part of their school holiday activities at the start of July.
The customers, aged between 10 and 19, enjoyed a trip on the V/Line train before a picnic lunch and a walk on the Geelong foreshore, on an unseasonably sunny winter’s day.
They were accompanied by three Yooralla Disability Support Workers, Caiti, Tyler and Monica who supported them throughout the day.
The youngest of the group Finn, 10, also enjoyed the big playground and climbing frame; while the rest of the customers enjoyed the lovely view.
The school holiday programs are not just fun (although there is plenty of that) and respite for parents/carers; they also provide an opportunity for skills building for participants.
They receive plenty of incidental learning such as to navigate to destinations, ordering food and navigating public transport.
Luca, 19, who has been with Yooralla for 10 years and attends the Box Hill Hub, participated in his first Yooralla school holiday program this year.
He said he likes the school holiday program mostly to catch up with friends.
“It’s the people that I meet and people that have the same common things; and the scenery as well and the activities.
“I just really enjoyed doing the school holiday program with you guys,” Luca said.
