Changes to NDIS legislation

These changes are the result of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024 being passed by the Parliament on 22 August.

On 3 October 2024, important changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) laws will take effect, with the aim of improving the scheme for all participants, their families and carers.

What are the changes?

These changes are the result of  the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024 being passed by the Parliament on 22 August.

When these laws come into effect on 3 October, participants may see changes in:

  • how their eligibility is assessed
  • the supports that can be funded by the NDIS
  • how their plans are managed
  • how their funding is allocated and needs to be spent, and
  • requirements for information gathering for eligibility reassessment.

The changes on 3 October aren’t expected to have a significant impact on the way people currently experience the NDIS. More practical changes will occur in 2025, as other key reforms, such as the development of foundational supports, are introduced. The NDIS will work with participants to ensure they know what changes will affect them, and what they need to do

You can read about these changes in full, on the NDIS website.

The NDIS have also prepared Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the legislation and an Easy Read version of the NDIS law changes is also available on their website.
